Every teenager is resolving 3 profound questions.
The Teenage Identity Crisis: Helping Teens Discover Their Strengths
The teenage years are a time of discovery, change, and uncertainty. As teens navigate friendships, school pressures, and the expectations of society, they’re unconsciously wrestling with three profound questions:
- Who am I?
- Do I like myself?
- Will I be okay in my future?
These aren’t just passing thoughts—they shape a teenager’s self-esteem, confidence, and mental well-being.
Teenagers are in the midst of forming their identity, piecing together their strengths, values, and sense of purpose. But the modern world complicates this process. In a society obsessed with achievement and perfection, it’s easy for teens to feel lost, insecure, and overwhelmed.
The Weight of Comparison & Expectation
Today’s teens face overwhelming pressure from multiple fronts. Social media, academic expectations, and peer comparisons create an environment where self-doubt thrives. Many feel they’re not enough—not smart enough, not good-looking enough, not successful enough.
Social media amplifies these struggles. With every scroll, teens see curated highlights of other people’s lives—flawless selfies, impressive achievements, and picture-perfect friendships. The unspoken message? You’re falling behind. You’re not as good. You need to try harder to fit in.
Beyond social media, schools demand high performance. Tests, assignments, and career decisions weigh heavily on young minds, reinforcing the idea that their worth is tied to grades and accomplishments.
This pressure is taking a toll. Rates of anxiety, depression, and self-harm are rising. Suicide rates among young people are at an all-time high. Teens feel the weight of expectations but often lack the tools to manage the stress and maintain a healthy sense of self-worth.
More than ever, young people need positive interventions that help them see their value and potential. They need to know they are more than their grades, their looks, or their followers.
The Power of Strengths in Shaping Identity
Research continues to show that one of the most effective ways to build a strong, confident identity is through strengths discovery. When teens uncover their natural talents, it shifts their entire perspective:
✅ They see the best in themselves rather than focusing on flaws.
✅ They stop comparing and start embracing their uniqueness.
✅ They build confidence in their abilities and future.
✅ They develop a growth mindset, seeing challenges as opportunities rather than threats.
✅ They navigate relationships with greater self-awareness and authenticity.
At MyStrengths, we believe every teen deserves the chance to discover who they are and what makes them great. And we’re not the only ones who think like this. In 2024, nearly 150 high schools in NSW alone engaged MyStrengths in empowering students to discover and grow their strengths.
Teachers, parents, and students alike have witnessed firsthand the transformative power of strengths-based development:
